Sèvres-Cité de la céramique

Ceramics City

A new centre dedicated to ceramic art exhibits its sumptuous collections and invites you to discover the secrets of the famous Sevres bleu.

It was time for a City in honour of ceramics, this very first ‘art of fire’ in which France has distinguished itself over the centuries.
This new institution is the fruit of a collaboration between the National Ceramics Museum, with over 50,000 pieces from around the world and from all periods, and the famous Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, founded under Louis XV to develop the creation of porcelain throughout Europe.

In this national centre there are now one hundred ceramic artists at work in 27 different workshops. These workshops are open to the public by appointment, to learn about the ancestral techniques and know-how of these master crafts, in particular the secrets of the famous Sevres bleu.

You can above all admire the varnished terracotta, the earthenware, the stoneware, the porcelain, the stained glass, the painted enamel and the glassware from a variety of countries, from antiquity to the present day, all part of its permanent collections.

The programme of temporary exhibitions allows for tribute to be paid to various periods and foreign schools. For example, this year the emphasis has been on the ceramics of the contemporary French scene and the work of the Russian school in the 1900s.
