A stay in Paris is like a breath of life

Angelika Leiser, of dual German and Dutch nationality, has offered herself a second home in the capital. Once a month, she goes to Paris to immerse herself in the effervescence of the city.

What memories do you have of your first visit to Ile-de-France?

My first stay in Paris goes back some fifteen years. It was, for me, a discovery, a veritable adventure. But I quickly realised that it was much easier to move around than I had first thought. I was thus able to take advantage of the city. Wherever I went, it was beautiful and overflowing with life...

And today, what are your favourite pastimes?

Above all, I take advantage of the wide choice of cultural events. As I am a singing teacher, I love to go to concerts. Recently, I was lucky enough to come across the “Classique au Vert” festival in the Parc Floral, in front of the Château de Vincennes. The quality of the concerts was really quite extraordinary.
I regularly do the rounds of the Paris museums, I am a great art lover, and there is so much to see.
I also like very much the arthouse cinemas of the Latin Quarter. And of course, walking around: I spend time in town and I take it all in...

Do you have a favourite walk?

I like to start my walk at the Louvre Pyramid. From there, I walk through the Tuileries Gardens in the direction of Place de la Concorde. I cross the Seine by the Léopold Sedar-Senghor footbridge or by the Concorde bridge and I continue towards Invalides.
But there is another Parisian walk that is an absolute must. On Sunday morning, start at Place de la Bastille and walk down Boulevard Henri IV, then continue along the banks of the Seine to Notre Dame de Paris.

Les Quartiers Latins

Is there another quarter that you would recommend to somebody visiting for a few days?

The Odéon quarter is very agreeable. It is central and there some charming hotels. I once stayed at the Hotêl de Nesle. Each room was decorated differently, Chinese style, Eastern style or African safari style...

Did you already make trips outside of the city centre?

For now, I only make trips to the most well-known places. I have been to Fontainebleau and of course to Château de Versailles. But I'm not going to stop there. I would really like to discover Auvers-sur-Oise and walk in the steps of Van Gogh.

And in Paris, what do you like the most?

Paris is full of paradoxes. On the one hand, I like the anonymity of the capital: I love to immerse myself in a large dynamic city. But I also enjoy what is referred to as “la vie de quartier” (life in the quarters). As I come regularly, I have adopted some habits. In a little restaurant where I dine often, I get a wave through the window when they see me coming.
