Grand Palais

Since 2007, the Grand Palaishas hosted contemporary artists who design for masterworks. Huang Yong Pingtakes up the challenge of the 2016 edition.

Based in Paris, Huang Yong Ping is one of the major figures of the Chinese avant-garde of the 1980s. Through the Xiamen Dada movement ("Zen is Dada, Dada is Zen") which he founded, he expressed his taste for paradox and deconstruction. In his monumental works, he confronts the East and the West and reinterprets the philosophies and myths of different cultures to reveal the contradictions. We have him to thank for a life-size Noah's Ark (Ark 2009) in the chapel of Fine Arts in Paris and a giant snake skeleton (Snake Ocean) on the beach of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins.

For Monumenta 2016, he is designing a colorful and spectacular architectural facility, reflecting on the political, economic and societal transformations of our world.
