Masséot Abaquesne, the first French potter

For the very first time, a retrospective will be devoted to Masséot Abaquesne, a Rouen potter of the XVI century.

From Wednesday 11 May to Monday 03 October 2016

Musée de la Renaissance - Château d'Ecouen

Although Masséot Abaquesne has been labeled the first French potter, little is known about him. Hailing from Cherbourg, he worked in Rouen from 1526 to 1564. His work is mainly made up of pharmacy jars, panels and paving tiles. Thus, the Écouen National Renaissance Museum, in Val-d'Oise, decided to pay tribute to his superb creations by organizing a big retrospective of his works. This is certainly an unprecedented endeavor in memory of Masséot Abaquesne.

Throughout his carrier, he worked for world class personalities notably Anne de Montmorency for the paving of the château dÉcouen in 1542 (one of his most renowned work) or Claude d'Urfé for Bâti d'Urfé in 1557. Furthermore, it is thanks to him that the Boos dovecote is adorned with earthenware tiles.
