In the Panthéon! – An installation by JR
The French street artist and photographer JR has returned, with the creation of a work which is to contribute to the restoration of the Panthéon.
Wearing a borsalino and hidden behind his sunglasses, the street artist and photographer JR is the origin of the finest exhibitions of photographs of men and women in the world, with the following projects: Face2Face (portraits of Israelis and Palestinians), Women are Heroes(a tribute to the dignity of women who are victims of conflicts) and Inside Out(changing the world).
The National Monuments Centre has asked the “photo graffiti artist” to develop a work which is to serve as a tribute to the Inside Out line, a project conveying humanistic and universal values and embodied by the Panthéon, whose restoration is a big task.
During the period of the work, the outer dome, the cupola and the nave of the Republican temple of illustrious figures were covered with 4,160 portraits of anonymous persons (in particular in eight French monuments) collected by JR with the help of a lorry converted into a booth. Earning the name Au Panthéon !, this ephemeral achievement honours personalities recognised at the Panthéon and to these anonymous individuals who have the chance to become “great men”.
