From Jordan to Congo, Art and Chrisianity in Central Africa
This exhibition will portray the influence of Roman Catholicism and the Christian iconography on Kongo art and culture from the XV to the XX century.
The art and culture of Kongo would definitely not have been the same without the influence of Roman Catholicism and Christian iconography. This is what the exhibition ‘Jourdain au Congo, art et christianisme en Afrique central intends to demonstrate via roughly one hundred works of arts among which are the crucifix, sculptures, pendants, engravings and even drawings.
Both historical and artistic, the event will be sub-divided into different parts. First, it will focus on the different phases of the Christianization of the Kongo Kingdom from 1492 to the XVIII century. Second, it will dwell on the XIX and XX centuries through the attributes of the leaders of that period. Finally, the event will discuss the history of traditional religions but from the point of view of Christianity.
