Domaine national de Saint-Cloud

Spend a rustic afternoon a few minutes from Paris in a vast garden with majestic cascades and pools surrounded by lush pathways.

Which garden designed by Le Nôtre and considered one of Europe’s finest can be found just outside Paris? That of the Chateau de Versailles? Wrong! Another French park, less well-known than that of the Sun King, extends over 460 hectares to the South-East of Paris.

It is that of the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud, to be found just a stone’s throw from the Bois de Boulogne, on the banks of the Seine. Here there is no chateau (it was destroyed in 1892) but a splendid combination of greenery and water which has delighted generations of sovereigns who have holidayed there since the 16th century.

Now you have a chance to stroll down the pathways and discover the charm of the French garden, the English-style Trocadero garden, Marie-Antoinette’s flower garden where the State’s roses are grown and the numerous copses.

Above all admire the splendour of the Grand Cascade by Le Pautre and the dozens of fountains, pools and statues which surround it. If you are a contemporary art enthusiast, don’t miss the monumental sculpture by Scottish artist Bryan McCormack in homage to the wind, a recent installation.

And finally, to end your walk, make your way to the highest point of the garden, known as the Lanterne, to take in the vast panoramic view of Paris. Take note: over the summer period, the domain hosts two renowned rock festivals: Rock-en-Seine and Cinéma sous les étoiles.
