Le Zèbre de Belleville

This former art deco cinema, converted into a theatre, programmes cabaret-circus troupes and young contemporary talents.

From its foundation until the end of the 1930s, the Zèbre de Belleville maintained its elegant art deco architecture and a striped equid galloping over its facade. Originally named the Berry-Zèbre, it was one of the most beautiful cinemas in the Belleville-la Courtille-Ménilmontant area and a late-night gathering place for crowds of film buffs. It became known for screening Egyptian and later Indian films with subtitles. In 1994 it closed down. Thanks to a petition signed by local residents and well-known actors, and after a long legal and financial battle, the Berry-Zèbre reopened in 2000 as a theatre in which cabaret-circus troupes are programmed and circus workshops organised for children, as well as up-and-coming pop rock, French chanson and World music artists.
