National natural history museum – Botanical gardens

A journey to the heart of biodiversity to help us to better know and understand nature.

Overlooking the banks of the Seine, the Jardin des Plantes (botanical gardens) is a magical place devoted to flora and fauna, which has been entrancing Parisians for more than four centuries. The story of the establishment and development of this site is also told in the Jardin des Plantes’ Cabinet d’histoire (history corner), in a charming building decorated like a private house.

Continue your walk to the gardens’ Roseraie (rose garden) and delight in the hundreds of varieties of flowers, which grow as shrubs or weave round small arches, and then in the mountain plants of the Jardin Alpin (Alpine garden).

To find out all there is to know about vegetables and learn how to tell your solanaceae from your apiaceae, head to the Ecole de Botanique (botanical school).

At the Grande Galerie de l’Evolution (great gallery of evolution), from dinosaurs to giraffes, via whales and giant squid, etc., hundreds of mounted or fossilized animal species explain the history of transformations in the species since the dawn of creation. To see living animals, head to the Ménagerie (zoo), before studying skeletons, organs and shells at the Galerie de Paléontologie (palaeontology gallery).

For lovers of fine stones, the Galerie de Minéralogie (mineralogy gallery) invites you to look at its fine collection of crystals, precious minerals and artistic objects, which is among the most prestigious in the world. Please note that this gallery is closed for renovation until 2011.

The Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (national natural history museum) represents 60 acres of unexpected delights in the centre of Paris which can help provide an understanding of sustainable development issues.
